An eye-witness account of fighting and military life in the South Pacific was brought to the College on April 10 when Sgt. Milburn McCarty '35, Marine Corps combat correspondent, gave a public lecture on "Sidelights of War in the South Pacific." Fresh from the battle area and from experiences in Bougainville, the Solomons, Samoa, New Hebrides, and Guadalcanal, he drew for his audience a picture not only of the excitement of war but also of the boredom, confusion and homesickness involved. He dealt also with the Marines' relations with the natives and told in some detail of the work of the combat correspondent corps, which up to now has been unique with the Marines.

Sergeant McCarty, who was in charge of War Bond promotion for the U. S. Treasury before his enlistment, is back in this country on furlough of about thirty days and hopes to go back to the Pacific battle area after that period.
