The Comparative Literature Program presents the annual Hoffman Lecture: 'For Reel, For Real: New Approaches to (Auto)biography.' Claudia Rankine, an acclaimed poet and essayist, challenges boundaries between genres and examines the impact of race and culture in her work. Join the poet as she exposes innovative methods artists and writers use to document a "poetics of being." This lecture addresses how new works recapture the complexities of lives shaped by historical trauma, emphasizing the vibrancy of existence through the lens of Black aliveness. Rankine highlights contributions from artists like Martine Syms, Carrie Mae Weems, and Titus Kaphar, inviting reflection on the richness of individual stories. This event is free and open to the public.
